Caring for your new tattoo

It is important that you follow this advice closely to ensure your tattoo heals safely and quickly. Once you leave the studio, caring for your tattoo is your own responsibility.

Keep your tattoo covered with the white pad I have applied until the following morning.

The following morning, while in the shower, carefully remove the white pad. Make sure your hands are clean — your tattoo is an open wound, so treat it as such. Ensure the water is warm and use an unscented antibacterial liquid soap or shower gel.

Gently massage the tattoo with your clean hands, removing all excess ink and plasma. Before finishing, give the tattoo a quick rinse with cold water to close the pores. Then allow it to air dry for 10–15 minutes. Do not use a towel.

Do not apply any cream until after the pads have been removed the following day.

Once the tattoo has air dried, apply the second pad you were given the previous day, with the hole side facing down towards the fresh tattoo, and leave it on for 24 hours.

The next morning, repeat the same removal and cleaning process.

Once the tattoo has air dried again, apply a thin layer of Palmer’s Cocoa Butter. Please do not use anything that contains antiseptic, as this will damage your fresh tattoo. Only use a new pump bottle, not a tub, as tubs increase the risk of infection from putting fingers repeatedly back into the product.

Never re-wrap the tattoo once you have started using aftercare cream — it is one or the other.

Always make sure your hands are clean when applying aftercare. Less is more. Apply the cream when your tattoo feels dry and tight, ideally morning and night. Do not over-cream, as this may block pores, cause pimples, and lead to excess dirt clinging to your new tattoo.

Shower as normal. Avoid swimming or bathing until the tattoo is fully healed - a minimum of 2/3 weeks.

Be very mindful if you go to the exercise. I would advise no exercise while the pads on still on the fresh tattoo.

Do not pick or scratch the area, and wear clean, loose clothing while healing. Avoid the sun and sunbeds.

Use the recommended cream for the first 7–10 days, then continue to moisturise as normal.

Your general wellbeing will affect how your tattoo heals. Make sure you eat well, stay hydrated, and get plenty of rest.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or if you think the tattoo may need a touch-up.
